📍 3811 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60618

Borinquen Lounge carries a real piece of Chicago food history, even if the storefront itself isn't the original: the jibarito — that plantain-bread sandwich that swapped out bread for crisp fried plantains — was adapted here in Chicago by Juan C. Figueroa in 1996, at a Borinquen Restaurant location on California Avenue that's since closed.

This Western Avenue spot carries the name and the dish forward, with Bistec and Lechón jibaritos leading a menu of straightforward Puerto Rican cooking — mofongo, rice and beans, roast pork — without much fuss or flash.

It's the kind of place regulars default to for a filling plate rather than an occasion, open seven days with a solidly affordable price point throughout.
