Autre Monde means "another world," and since 2011 this Roosevelt Road dining room has been delivering exactly that to Berwyn: a passport stamp's worth of Mediterranean cooking without leaving the western suburbs.

The wild boar bolognese is a genuine departure from standard Italian, and the cowboy steak is the order for anyone who wants something bigger.

The menu travels the whole coastline, from France and Spain to Portugal, Italy, Greece and across North Africa, cooked from scratch and served as shareable plates that keep the table passing things around. The bar matches the range, with old-world wines, craft cocktails built on small-batch spirits, local beers and a real spirit-free program for the non-drinkers. The résumé is long for a neighborhood restaurant: three stars from both the Tribune and the Sun-Times, four from Time Out Chicago, a Tribune Best New Restaurant nod, a spot on Phil Vettel's "Phil's 50" essential list from 2017 to 2020 and a place on Eater Chicago's best suburban restaurants. It's also a Green Seal–certified green restaurant built with local, sustainable materials, which fits a place that calls its stretch of Roosevelt "The Beltway" and treats it like home.

The secret garden patio is the move in warm weather. Wine people should ask about Vin du Monde, the restaurant's wine club. Dinner runs Monday and Thursday through Sunday starting at 5pm, and it's closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Book on Resy or order pickup through Toast.
