Aroy Thai leans Northern and Northeastern Thai rather than the Central-Thai menu most Chicago Thai spots default to -- the grilled pork neck salad and the combo platter of Isaan sausages (including sai ua) are the real reasons regulars go, not pad thai.

It's BYOB with a cash discount, a quiet Damen Avenue storefront that doesn't try to look like more than it is, tucked under the Brown Line tracks in Lincoln Square. The Infatuation gave it an 8.1 and specifically warns the small dining room is almost always full, so call ahead. Refinery29 has praised it as one of the most authentic Thai kitchens in the city, built around a traditional northern Thai menu rather than Americanized standards.

It's also a bit of a comeback story -- food writers who tracked the restaurant through the 2010s describe it as a longtime neighborhood favorite that faded for a stretch before being rediscovered by Chicago's food-nerd crowd. Daily lunch specials come with soup or salad included, weekdays, closed Tuesdays.
