Super GemChicago Exclusive Gem$$The shop dates to 1977 in Antioch, where Art and Karen Wicklein, high school sweethearts and Antioch natives who left corporate jobs, bought it in 2008. Their pitch was to be "the crust of the community," and it worked well enough that the brand now runs from Lindenhurst, Fox Lake, McHenry and Woodstock to Wisconsin, Tuscaloosa and Charlotte. The menu is the full Chicago pizzeria lineup: the double-decker pie that built the brand, Chicago thin crust cut in squares, stuffed pizza, stromboli and Italian beef. The everyday move is the Flavor of the Day, two slices and a drink all day.
The pie rotates by weekday: BBQ chicken Monday, stuffed pepperoni Tuesday, western Wednesday, buffalo chicken Thursday and bacon double cheeseburger Friday. For a bigger order, the online code FREECHEESE adds a free 12-inch thin-crust cheese pizza to any 18-inch pie. It's open 11am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday, with online ordering for pickup and delivery through the apps.
