Afro Joe's Coffee and Tea has built something bigger than a coffee shop in Beverly: by day, it's a Black-owned cafe known for pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and a pot roast grilled cheese that's earned its own praise, landing a spot on Yelp's Top 100 Coffee Shops of 2025 along the way.

Pot roast grilled cheese and a full after-hours events calendar (live music, poetry slams, open mic) — Yelp Top 100 Coffee Shops 2025

By night, the room turns over entirely — live music, poetry slams, open mic nights, and ticketed events like a 'Bourbon, Beers & Cigars' night — making it as much a community gathering space as a place to get a latte and finish your thesis.

It's a model that a lot of coffee shops talk about building toward and relatively few actually pull off: a genuine third space that still makes a great cup of coffee.
