Afghan Kabob has real staying power behind it — owner Nasir Raufi opened the original location in Albany Park back in 2007, years before Afghan food had much of a footprint in Chicago, and relocated the restaurant to Morton Grove in 2020 rather than closing for good.

Kabuli palaw (a slow-cooked rice dish layered with tender lamb, carrots, and raisins) and mantu (steamed dumplings) anchor a menu that one review specifically warned not to assume will taste like more familiar Middle Eastern dishes — Afghan cooking has its own distinct spice logic.

It's one of just a handful of restaurants in the entire Chicago area still serving this cuisine, run by a family that's kept it going through a cross-country move and back.
