A Real Day at the Shedd Aquarium

The Abbott Oceanarium is the move: a curved wall of glass looking out at belugas and dolphins with a real Lake Michigan backdrop behind them, so the tank and the actual lake blur together. Shedd is one of the oldest aquariums in the country and it shows in how much ground it covers β€” Waters of the World, the Wild Reef shark tunnel, Amazon Rising β€” so this is a half-day-or-more visit if you want to see it properly, not a quick stop.

How to Spend the Day

Morning (9:00 AM open)

Start in the Abbott Oceanarium before it fills in β€” it's the single most popular room in the building and gets loud and crowded fast once school groups arrive.

Midday

Wild Reef (the shark tunnel) and Amazon Rising tend to move faster than the Oceanarium β€” good midday stops once the morning crowd thins.

Lunch

Bubble Net food court on the lower level has a genuine lake view if you time it for a window seat; bringing your own food and using the designated BYO seating is the budget move.

Afternoon

Your CityPASS 4-D Experience slot, if you booked one β€” check availability early in the day rather than showing up and hoping.

How Chicago CityPASS® Actually Works Here (ELI5)

The short version: buy once online, get a mobile pass instantly, show it on your phone at the door.

  1. Buy Chicago CityPASS® online (button above) — you get a mobile pass delivered immediately, no printing needed.
  2. Use the email you buy with to set up the My CityPASS app or my.citypass.com — that's where your tickets, reservations, and attraction details live.
  3. If the attraction needs a timed entry reservation, reserve it through the app before you go — reservations are subject to availability, so earlier is safer, especially on weekends.
  4. At the door, show your mobile ticket on your phone. That's it — no separate line, no voucher exchange.
  5. You have 1 year from purchase to start using the pass; once you use the first attraction, the rest of the attractions are valid for 9 consecutive days.
Chicago CityPASS® admission to Shedd covers the Abbott Oceanarium, Waters of the World, Amazon Rising, Wild Reef, the Polar Play Zone, the Amphibians exhibit, seasonal Stingray Touch (May–Oct), and your choice of one 4-D Experience. One detail we couldn't fully confirm either way: whether a separately-presented dolphin/aquatic show (beyond general Oceanarium access) is included or ticketed extra β€” check at the counter or on citypass.com before counting on it.

Parking

Like the Field Museum and Adler, Shedd sits on Museum Campus β€” parking is run by the Chicago Park District, and Shedd's own site recommends booking ahead through SpotHero for up to 50% off the drive-up rate.
