This is one of the great encyclopedic art museums in the country, and it's easy to underestimate how much is inside: Grant Wood's American Gothic, one of the best Impressionist collections outside France, and the Cassatt rooms, all under one roof on Michigan Avenue. Pick a wing rather than trying to do all of it β the building is bigger than a single visit can really cover.
How to Spend the Day
Morning
Start with the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist galleries β they're the most crowded rooms in the building by early afternoon.
Midday
The Modern Wing (south end) tends to be quieter, with the museum's contemporary and design collections.
Lunch
Terzo Piano, the sit-down restaurant on the Modern Wing's third floor, or Piano Terra's seasonal cafe in the North Garden for something faster.
Afternoon
A ticketed special exhibition, if one's running and you've added it β otherwise, the American art and decorative arts galleries are a good lower-traffic finish.
How Chicago CityPASS® Actually Works Here (ELI5)
The short version: buy once online, get a mobile pass instantly, show it on your phone at the door.
- Buy Chicago CityPASS® online (button above) — you get a mobile pass delivered immediately, no printing needed.
- Use the email you buy with to set up the My CityPASS app or my.citypass.com — that's where your tickets, reservations, and attraction details live.
- If the attraction needs a timed entry reservation, reserve it through the app before you go — reservations are subject to availability, so earlier is safer, especially on weekends.
- At the door, show your mobile ticket on your phone. That's it — no separate line, no voucher exchange.
- You have 1 year from purchase to start using the pass; once you use the first attraction, the rest of the attractions are valid for 9 consecutive days.
Chicago CityPASS® covers Fast Pass entry β skip-the-line general admission plus the full permanent collection and any non-ticketed special exhibitions running that day. It does not cover separately ticketed special exhibitions; those carry an extra fee you can add at checkout or by contacting the museum ahead of your visit β confirmed directly on the museum's own FAQ.
Parking
The Art Institute doesn't run its own garage β its own site points visitors to the Millennium Garages (members get a discount) and to SpotHero for up to 50% off a drive-up rate.
- Millennium Park Garages (Millennium, Grant Park North, Grant Park South) are the closest options, all a short walk from the museum entrance.
- Downtown garage rates vary a lot by time of day and how far ahead you book β there's no single official flat rate posted, so check Millennium Garages' current pricing or SpotHero before you go rather than assuming a number.
Where to Eat
- Terzo Piano (3rd floor, Modern Wing) β the museum's sit-down restaurant, chef-driven menu.
- Piano Terra β a seasonal, more casual cafe option in the North Garden.
- Michigan Avenue and the surrounding Loop have dense lunch options within a couple of minutes' walk if you'd rather step out.
