The Smashing Pumpkins: The Rats In A Cage Tour
About This Event
A hometown arena show for a band that actually formed in Chicago in 1988 — Billy Corgan and company playing the building a few miles from where the whole thing started, not just another stop on the tour map.
Corgan and guitarist James Iha met at a used record shop where Corgan worked, and bassist D'arcy Wretzky joined after getting into an argument with Corgan outside a bar over an entirely different band. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin came in later, found through a classified ad — a genuinely unglamorous way to assemble a band that would go on to define '90s alternative rock. Their 1993 album Siamese Dream broke them into the mainstream, and 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness — an ambitious double album — debuted at No. 1 and produced the hits ('1979,' 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings,' 'Tonight, Tonight') most casual fans actually know them for.
Worth knowing: showtime is 8:00 PM, and tickets start at $92 — check unitedcenter.com for current seating and pricing.
