The Lion King
About This Event
The Lion King's puppetry and masks do things a movie screen can't — actors on stilts becoming giraffes, full-scale animal puppets moving with real weight, the kind of stagecraft that's worth the ticket price on visual spectacle alone, running two full months at the Cadillac Palace.
It opened on Broadway in 1997, directed by Julie Taymor, who won Tony Awards for both directing and costume design — the first woman ever to win a Tony for directing a musical. It became the highest-grossing stage production in box office history, and Taymor personally oversaw two dozen separate global productions of it. Nearly three decades later, it's still running on Broadway, alongside touring productions like this one.
Worth knowing: pricing swings wildly by date, with later-June performances noticeably cheaper than the opening weeks — if cost matters more than being there on night one, book further into the run.
