The Jayhawks

Riviera Theatre · Uptown

About This Event

A Minneapolis alt-country band that's been quietly influencing everyone from Wilco to the current Americana revival for three decades, best known outside that circle for 'Blue.' 18+ show, presented by 93XRT — real local radio credibility, not a syndicated booking.

The Jayhawks formed in Minneapolis in 1985, built around singer-songwriters Mark Olson and Gary Louris, who met at one of the band's earliest shows and had Louris on board by the end of the night. Their sound — country and rock blended with none of the irony that word sometimes implies — got them tagged early as one of the first true 'alt-country' acts, well before that became a recognized genre with its own section at the record store. Bands like Uncle Tupelo and the whole Twin Cities alt-country scene that followed owe them a real debt, even if The Jayhawks themselves never broke as big commercially as the sound they helped establish.

Worth knowing: showtime is 7:30 PM, it's 18+, and tickets start at $83 — check ticketmaster.com for seating.
