Mrs. Doubtfire
About This Event
The 1993 movie's premise — Robin Williams in drag as his own kids' nanny — turned into a full musical comedy, directed by four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks, playing one week only at the Nederlander. It shares the same November 24 opening weekend as several other Broadway In Chicago shows, an unusually stacked holiday week even for this town.
Getting here took over a decade and a false start. A producer first optioned the film for a stage musical in 2013; the first attempt, with a score by Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and a book by Harvey Fierstein, stalled out and went on what Menken himself called 'creative hiatus.' A completely different team eventually finished the job — Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick wrote the score, Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell the book — and it finally opened on Broadway in December 2021, nearly three decades after the film that inspired it.
Worth knowing: no single showtime is listed since it plays a normal multi-performance theater schedule across its one-week run — check broadwayinchicago.com for the exact date and time you want.
