About This Event
Two outdated HelperBot androids, discarded by their owners in a near-future Seoul, find each other in a storage facility and fall in love — one of them keeps a dying houseplant alive the whole time, which is doing more emotional work than it sounds like. It's a strange premise that keeps getting described the same way by everyone who sees it: it shouldn't work, and it absolutely does.
It started small. Will Aronson and Hue Park developed it with Korea's Wooran Foundation starting in 2014, and it premiered in Seoul in 2016 in a 300-to-400-seat theater, where it ran five seasons and won six Korean Musical Awards before anyone outside Korea had heard of it.
The Broadway version opened at the 1,000-seat Belasco Theatre in November 2024 and won six 2025 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book (both Aronson and Park), Best Direction (Michael Arden), and Best Leading Actor (Darren Criss) — a rare case of a show's original writing team sweeping its own Broadway categories years after a scrappy Seoul start. This Chicago stop is only two weeks; $49 day-of rush tickets are available at the box office for anyone skipping resale prices.
