Kodo: One Earth Tour 2027 — Luminance
About This Event
Kodo's shows are as much physical theater as concert — a world-renowned Japanese taiko drumming ensemble whose choreography is built around massive drums, no amplification needed, precision timed down to fractions of a second between performers.
The group formed in 1981 on Sado Island, off Japan's west coast, splitting off from an earlier taiko group called Ondekoza after a dispute between its founder and some of its members. Kodo debuted that same year at the Berlin Philharmonie and has since played nearly 4,000 shows worldwide, splitting its year roughly into thirds: touring overseas, touring Japan, and living communally back on Sado Island to train and develop new material. The name itself carries a double meaning in Japanese — 'heartbeat,' the source of all rhythm, and, read differently, 'children of the drum.'
