Wolfy's has held the same Peterson Avenue corner since 1967, and it carries a direct bloodline to one of Chicago's defining hot dog names: founder Mickey Becker was related by marriage to the family behind Fluky's, the North Side stand credited with inventing the char dog style in the first place.

A char-cooked jumbo Chicago-style dog dressed the traditional way — from a stand whose founder was related by marriage to Fluky's, the place credited with inventing the char dog, and which has outlasted Fluky's own flagship by nearly 20 years.

When Becker sold the business to brothers Gus and Peter Romas in 1999, he reportedly put down one condition that mattered more than the sale price — don't change the hot dogs. They didn't, and more than two decades later the char-cooked jumbo Chicago-style dog still comes dressed the traditional way: bright yellow mustard, spruce-green piccalilli relish, a full-length pickle spear, on a poppy-seed bun, no ketchup anywhere near it. The rest of the menu covers the standard Chicago hot dog stand range — Italian beef, Italian combos, gyros, onion rings, a double cheeseburger, Polish sausage, pizza puffs — but the char dog is the reason this specific corner has outlasted Fluky's own Western Avenue flagship, which closed back in 2006.

Fluky's survives mostly as a memory and a style other stands still chase; Wolfy's is one of the places that actually still does it, under the same recipe, more than 55 years running. No confirmed Instagram or Facebook account turned up in research for a stand this old-school, which tracks — there's no happy hour either, just a hot dog that hasn't needed to change since the Johnson administration, and regulars who'd notice immediately if it did.
