Uncommon Ground opened its second location on Devon Avenue in Edgewater in 2007, roughly 16 years after owners Helen and Michael Cameron started the original near Wrigley Field, and it's since become nationally significant for something that has nothing to do with the dining room: a 2,500-square-foot rooftop farm that the Midwest Organic Services Association certified organic in October 2008, making it the first certified organic rooftop farm in the entire country.

The first certified organic rooftop farm in the US (10,000 lbs of food a year, zero-spray) plus GreenStar Brewing, Illinois's first certified organic brewery — both built into the same Edgewater building as the Uncommon Breakfast Melt brunch menu.

The farm runs zero-spray, grows everything from peas and carrots to peppers, garlic, and hops, and produces roughly 10,000 pounds of food a year that actually ends up on the menu downstairs — not a marketing gesture, a working supply chain. The building also houses GreenStar Brewing, the first certified organic brewery in Illinois, so the beer list isn't an afterthought either.

More than 100 students have interned on the farm over the years, and public tours run every Wednesday through the summer. All of that infrastructure backs up a menu built around seasonal, organic American comfort food — the Uncommon Breakfast Melt anchors a brunch that's become the real draw, solar power keeps the lights on, and the whole operation reads as a genuine model rather than a branding exercise.
