Rick and Deann Bayless opened Topolobampo in 1989, a few years after Frontera Grill next door, built deliberately to share the same front door as its more daring sibling.

One Michelin star from Rick Bayless, a tasting menu that treats regional Mexican cuisine with the same seriousness a French kitchen would demand of itself.

The tasting menu gets reinvented every six to eight weeks, built from eight dish categories into a three-, five-, or seven-course meal, or 'The Perfect Seven,' a chef-selected lineup with each course paired to both a wine and an agave spirit. The James Beard Foundation named it the country's best restaurant in 2017, and the kitchen — which Bayless has largely handed to others day-to-day — still plates dishes with real history behind them, including an Oaxacan black mole that once went to a White House state dinner. Reservations open 8-10 weeks out and go fast; call the restaurant directly, book through OpenTable, or use the site's booking button.

Large parties and private events route through a dedicated events contact rather than a general line. Closed Sunday and Monday.
