The Village Tavern of Long Grove isn't exaggerating when it calls itself one of the oldest restaurants in the country — it's been pouring drinks and serving food since 1847, when John Zimmer opened it inside his own wagon shop to feed travelers passing through a community of German immigrants while their wagons got repaired.

Operating continuously since 1847 — one of the oldest restaurants in the entire United States, built around a 35-foot mahogany bar that survived a 1960s fire.

Nearly two centuries later, the building's 35-foot mahogany bar is still the centerpiece, a survivor of a major Chicago-area fire in the 1960s that somehow didn't take it down. The menu stays true to the roadhouse identity: great steaks, half-pound Angus burgers, hearty sandwiches, fish fry, and German classics like pork schnitzel and bratwurst that nod directly to the tavern's founding community.

Live entertainment runs six nights a week, which says something about a place that's clearly built its identity around being a gathering spot first and a restaurant second — a role it's apparently been filling since before the Civil War.
