The original opened on Milwaukee Avenue, steps from the 606, in August 2016, packed with '80s and '90s toys, comic-book art and a back room of arcade cabinets, and built a following on New York-style thin crust and a griddled double cheeseburger. In June 2023 it took over the former Boiler Room space on California Avenue, a neighborhood pizza favorite, and turned it into this second, bigger location a short walk from the California Blue Line stop. The playbook is the same. Thin-crust pies are the house specialty, build-your-own or off the list, and the Stop-In burger is the sleeper. Owner Taylor Hammond modeled it on In-N-Out's semi-secret animal-style double-double, with mustard-griddled patties under a pile of caramelized onions, and a Chicago Tribune reporter who tried 71 burgers around town said he liked it better than the original.
There's a full bar with craft (and cheap) beer, wine and cocktails, arcade games to kill time while your pie bakes, and a back patio. The bigger room is the point of this location: it's built for group gatherings and kids' birthday parties, and events book through events@thestopalong.com. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 3-10PM, Saturday 11AM-10PM and Sunday 11AM-9PM; closed Monday. Order online for pickup or delivery.
