The Green Mill

Iconic/NotableUptown · Jazz Lounge Community-sourced, unverified
📍 4802 N Broadway, Chicago, IL 60640

The Green Mill didn't start as a jazz club at all -- it opened in 1907 as Pop Morse's Roadhouse, got renamed Green Mill Gardens in 1910 after Paris's Moulin Rouge, and only became the Prohibition-era speakeasy of legend once Al Capone started running liquor through tunnels beneath the room; his favorite booth is still there, and Capone henchman Jack "Machine Gun" McGurn reportedly held a stake in the place.

Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Billie Holiday, and Al Jolson all passed through over the decades, at one of the oldest continuously operating jazz clubs in the country. The club's current era dates to June 19, 1986, when Dave Jemilo took over and has run it since.

Friday's jam session, led by Marquis Hill, runs 1 to 3:30am, and Saturday's Righteous Rooster organ trio goes until 4, both covered by a $5 cover after 1am. It's closed one day a year, for Thanksgiving.
