It sits in the alley between Davis, Church, Maple and Oak in downtown Evanston, behind an old green-blue barn door, inside an 1883 brick barn that once stabled the horses for Borden Milk's horse-and-buggy deliveries. Amy Morton built it as an homage to her father, Arnie Morton, the restaurateur behind Morton's. The room earns the backstory, with twenty-foot ceilings, raw brick and a chandelier glowing with hundreds of tiny lights. The steaks are Heritage Angus and come with red wine demi-glace and German butterball potatoes, from an 8 oz prime skirt to a 16 oz dry-aged ribeye. Add béarnaise, au poivre or crab Oscar on top, or make it surf and turf with a giant tiger prawn. The shrimp cocktail is billed as an "Ode to Arnie," and the Mortini mixes bourbon with Hook's cheddar and maple. There are three ways to do it for less.

Happy hour runs 4 to 5pm with $10 cocktails, $5 beers, $5 bites and $10 half-dozen oysters or lobster rolls. The three-course pre-theater menu is $59.95 from 4:30 to 6. Weeknights bring a rotating special: crab spaghetti Tuesday, chicken pot pie Wednesday, Mafalda's lasagna Thursday and baked walleye Friday. Closed Mondays. Book on OpenTable, and there's valet on Friday and Saturday nights.
