Tarra turned a long-vacant River North corner into a two-level Thai project — a roughly 100-seat dinner restaurant upstairs from chef Namo Chowcharoen, with restaurateur Michael Chen and GoldStreet Partners, and a 60-seat cocktail den called Sura tucked below it.

The southern-style crab curry and clams in roasted chili cream sauce from a menu built on specific regional Thai cooking rather than the usual pad-thai shorthand — plus Sura, the separately-reservable cocktail lounge one floor below.

The food side moves past the usual pad-see-ew shorthand into specific regional Thai cooking: skewers and tartare, a southern-style crab curry, and clams finished in a roasted chili cream sauce, all built for sharing rather than individual plates. Early OpenTable reviews run strong — 4.6 out of 5 across a small but real sample, with ambience (4.8) outpacing value (4.2), and the two knocks so far are slow drink service on a busy night and a goat dish one diner wanted cooked longer.

Downstairs, Sura runs its own reservations as a separate late-night lounge, with a cocktail list built around Southeast Asian flavors rather than Tarra's food-forward approach — different hours, different price band, different vibe entirely. No happy hour found for either level in a dedicated search.
