Tapas Barcelona has been feeding Evanston Spanish small plates since 1995, a few blocks south of Northwestern on Chicago Avenue, and it still runs on the original idea: eating out should feel like a celebration, whether it's a first date, a business dinner or eight friends splitting the check.

The portions are small on purpose so the table can order a lot of them, and the menu is long enough to make that dangerous. Start with the Datilles a la Sevillana ($11.50), bacon-wrapped dates with roasted red pepper sauce, which come up in just about every review. Then gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp, $14.25), grilled squid with lemon and garlic, baked goat cheese in tomato sauce with garlic bread, croquetas and Serrano ham on Catalan tomato bread. If the group is big enough, finish with a paella; the Paella Catalana ($32.50) is loaded with shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams and feeds two or three.

Flan for dessert, sangria throughout. The deal: a happy hour with any seasonal cocktail for $10, 5 to 6PM, Monday through Saturday. Dinner runs nightly from 5PM (until 10 on Friday and Saturday), lunch is served Friday through Sunday, and the room books private lunches Monday through Thursday. Reservations are on OpenTable and recommended, especially for groups; tables go fast.
