Gastón Acurio — the Peruvian chef often called the ambassador of Peruvian gastronomy, with 48 restaurants across 12 countries — opened Tanta as his third US restaurant and first in Chicago in 2013, one of very few Peruvian restaurants in the city and the first to land in River North specifically.

Executive Chef Jesus Delgado, who joined as sous chef in 2012 and was promoted in 2015, adapts the Peruvian menu for Chicago palates without losing what makes it Peruvian — reviewers single out the ceviche and lomo saltado most often, and the rooftop adds a view, even if a few call it cramped. Weekday happy hour runs $6 beer, $10 cocktails or wine, and $8-15 snacks at the bar.

A 4.7-star rating across more than 5,000 OpenTable reviews is a large, current sample backing up the reputation.
