Thirty-plus years later there are four Sultan's (Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square and Pilsen), and this original on North Avenue, steps from the Damen Blue Line, is still the one with the most character. The order is right there in the tagline — 'If it's not our falafel, it's freakin' awful!' The award-winning falafel sandwich is still $6: crisp-outside, tender-inside falafel in a warm pita lined with hummus, with cucumber, tomato, onion and tahini. It's one of the best-value lunches left in a neighborhood that's gotten expensive around it.
Step up to slow-roasted chicken shawarma, Grandma Zarifa's red lentil soup, a build-your-own Mediterranean salad bar, or the vegan combination plate with three falafel; vegetarians and vegans have more options here than almost anywhere nearby. It's 100% BYOB at every location, with a dining room, an outdoor patio and fast counter pickup, plus catering trays for groups. Hours run 10am to 10pm Monday through Saturday and 10am to 9pm on Sunday.
