Michael Olesen had wanted to run his own brewpub since college, tried once in 1986 and watched it fall through, then spent years in financial planning before finally opening Stockholm's in downtown Geneva in 2002.

The Reuben is the classic order, and the house-brewed State Street Pils is the reason to make it a sit-down meal instead of takeout.

The Swedish theming is real, not decorative dressing — a Viking ship painting anchors the dining room, and the name plays off 'vardshus,' the Swedish word for tavern, as a nod to Geneva's own Scandinavian settler history. It's often called one of the oldest brewpubs in the Chicago area, though no source independently confirms it holds the literal title outright. A July 2024 kitchen fire closed the place for about 70 days before a full rebuild and reopening; it had already marked its 20th anniversary in 2022 and picked up a Kane County Chronicle Readers' Choice win for best tavern/pub in 2021.

The in-house beer gets brewed in a window visible from the dining room, no hiding the process. Monday through Thursday closes earliest; Friday and Saturday run latest.
