📍 1000 N California Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Chef and baker Dinah Grossman opened Spinning J Bakery and Soda Fountain in 2015 with partner Parker Whiteway, after four years running a pie-and-pastry delivery business out of a commissary kitchen — they found this Humboldt Park storefront, a former art gallery and pharmacy, and built the concept around a real 1928 Liquid Carbonic marble soda-fountain bar salvaged for the space.

The pie is regularly called the best in the city, and the cranberry-yuzu meringue is proof this isn't playing it safe with flavor.

Everything, bread through pie, is made in-house, and the staff has grown from three people to twenty since opening. Handmade sodas run alongside the pie program, and the cranberry-yuzu meringue pie went on to win Good Morning America's national 'United States of Pie' contest.

Friday nights run late (until 9PM) and BYOB, with dog-friendly outdoor seating out front. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
