The gold flower logo borrows from the floral design of Sungnyemun, the nearby city gate that is South Korea's first National Treasure. That's a lot of royal history for a restaurant whose whole thing is a bubbling bowl of soup, but the soup earns it. Soondubu, the soft tofu stew, is the reason to come to the Milwaukee Avenue location in Glenview, and it's built in three steps. Pick a base (beef, kimchi, pork, clam, seafood, mixed, mushroom, dumpling, sausage or perilla), choose a spice level from plain to very spicy, then add a hot stone bowl of rice, with a raw egg to crack into the stew, or noodles.
Head chef Goung Muk Choi keeps the recipe classic on purpose. Around it there's tabletop-style Korean BBQ like LA galbi short ribs and bulgogi, hot stone bibimbap, bento boxes, seafood pancakes and tteokbokki, all with banchan. The deal is lunch, Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 2:45pm, when tofu stew is $15.99 instead of $16.99 and bibimbap drops a dollar too. It's open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 3pm and 4:30 to 9:30pm, closed Mondays.
