Savory Crust is a Filipino-owned empanada shop that started as a Morton Grove storefront from sisters Geri Hernandez and Jen Guidote — the kind of only-in-the-suburbs find that built a following one baked, butter-crust empanada at a time, long before a second Carol Stream location opened.

The Ube Empanada — purple yam filling, coarse sugar, baked not fried — is the Filipino Heritage Month pick this October.

The dough is baked, not fried, which keeps it flaky rather than greasy, and the fillings range from Argentinian beef and picadillo to Philly cheesesteak and a samosa-spiced version, each served with its own dipping sauce. For Filipino Heritage Month this October, the pick is the Ube Empanada — a dessert empanada filled with purple yam and finished with coarse sugar, part of the same rotating specials board that's also brought a chorizo-and-beans savory empanada and a pandan horchata through the shop this season.

Rice bowls (adobo chicken, bulgogi beef, longanisa with egg), a full wings menu, and frozen take-and-bake empanadas round out the counter — but the ube is the one worth planning a trip around while it's on the board.
