Red Square occupies a building that's been a Russian-style bathhouse since 1906 — it closed briefly in 2010 before reopening under this name in 2011 — but the restaurant and bar operate as their own thing, open to anyone without paying the spa's day-entry fee.

The dining room is built to look like a train car, a deliberate bit of theater that matches the traditional Russian menu: borscht, blini, and the rest of the hearty, cold-weather cooking that's harder to find in Chicago than it once was.

It's a genuine piece of the neighborhood's history as much as a restaurant, on a stretch of Division Street that's otherwise filled in with newer concepts.
