The Press Room calls itself Chicago's most intimate wine bar, and it earns the line: it's a lower-level room on West Washington Boulevard in the West Loop, built for friendly wines, classic cocktails and food that's 'sophisticated but familiar' rather than a tasting-menu production.

It feels like a bar you find once and then quietly keep to yourself. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 6pm, and it's one of the better ones in the neighborhood. Old fashioneds (bourbon, demerara, bitters) and martinis — vodka or gin, classic with vermouth, straight up, dirty or 'filthy' — are $8, and the happy hour wine feature is $10 a glass. The raw bar is the real pull: $2 oysters, shucked to order by the half-dozen or dozen (two dozen max per person), or 'Oysters & Bubbles,' a dozen oysters with a bottle of sparkling wine, for $45.

A $20 board of meats, cheese and accompaniments and $8 herbed olives round it out. The kitchen runs until 10pm Tuesday through Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday; the bar is open 4 to 11pm Tuesday and Wednesday, until midnight Thursday, and 5pm to 1am on weekends. The newsletter announces a not-so-secret cocktail of the week and wine dinners.
