Pookie Crack Cakes earned its name honestly — the mini loaf cakes are the kind of addictive that gets a bakery a line out the door before it even opens, and a 2026 Jean Banchet Award nomination for Pastry Chef of the Year to go with it.

Dedre McGee and her husband Douglas turned years of pop-up buzz into a real Bronzeville storefront in 2023, and the demand never really cooled off: regulars show up for a number well before the 11am opening, and the shop caps purchases at two cakes per flavor because they genuinely sell out most days. Flavors rotate through butter pecan praline (the signature), caramel, strawberry lemonade, red velvet and Oreo.

There's no hype-chasing special here — the cake is the special, and getting there early enough to buy one is the real deal.
