Tony Priolo and his longtime friend Ciro Longobardo opened Piccolo Sogno in July 2008 — the name means 'little dream' in Italian, a nod to how long the two had talked about running a restaurant together before actually doing it.

The back patio is hidden along Halsted, and once you've found it, it becomes the answer to every "somewhere quiet" request.

Priolo had been cooking since childhood, trained at The CHIC (graduating 1989), and built a reputation at Coco Pazzo through the late '90s and 2000s before leaving to strike out on his own. The timing could not have been worse — they opened into the 2008 recession with under $3,000 combined in the business and personal accounts — but they prioritized paying down construction debt and keeping staff on steady wages over paying themselves first, and the bet worked. The menu runs fresh, seasonal rustic Italian built around handmade pasta and an all-Italian wine list.

The garden patio, lined with illuminated trees and screened by privacy fencing, is regularly cited as one of the best in the city when weather allows. The partnership has since grown into a small restaurant group — Piccolo Sogno Due (2012), NONNINA (2016), and Maillard Tavern (2017) — and Priolo himself went on to beat Bobby Flay on Food Network in 2018, in both rounds. Valet parking runs $11 at lunch, $16 at dinner, cash only; reservations run through Resy.
