Walk in off Kirchoff Road and you get a dining room full of plants, the smell of wood smoke and a kitchen whose cooking is all over the map on purpose. The restaurant calls it Latin and Mediterranean cuisine crafted on the flame, and the menu backs that up. Bao-Bao Sliders come stuffed with roast pork and Latin cabbage. Lemongrass pork kabobs arrive with a yuca arepa. A Bulgarian cheese pie is wrapped in filo, and fried sweet plantains get Mediterranean sauce and feta. The sandwiches are where regulars plant their flag.
There's a slow-roasted Cuban, the namesake Phoenix Flame with overnight-marinated short rib and Asian BBQ sauce, and the Ultimate Steak Sandwich, which stacks skirt, NY strip and ribeye with cheese on a brioche bun. Hangover Soup, built on pork shoulder and three kinds of dried chiles, does exactly what it says. The move is Sizzle Happy Hours: every appetizer is half off Monday through Thursday from 3 to 5pm, dine-in only, which makes the yuca fries, shrimp kisses and spreads a steal. Save room for the Dubai Chocolate, a dessert of shredded filo, pistachio cream and tahini under 70% dark chocolate. Open daily 11am to 10pm, with online pickup and catering.
