Oceanique has run out of a 1920s Spanish-style Evanston building since 1989, when chef/owner Mark Grosz — trained under Jean Banchet at Le Francais, then in France and Hong Kong — opened it as a French-American seafood spot.

Zagat has ranked it the Chicago area's top seafood restaurant, and it's won Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence every year since 1994; the dinner-only menu changes daily with what's fresh.

The restaurant closes annually for a summer break (traditionally July) and underwent a 2013 remodel that moved it from a country-French look to a more contemporary one, with a communal trestle table added off the bar. The wine list runs close to 900 bottles.
