Nomu Ramen and Izakaya is the kind of strip-mall find Glenview keeps quiet about: a storefront on Milwaukee Avenue running ramen, sushi, udon and rice bowls with more ambition than the parking lot suggests.

The ramen holds its own, but the omakase-style sushi plates are the reason this quietly became a Glenview favorite.

The ramen is the name on the sign and the dish people argue about. OpenTable reviewers rate the place around 4.7, and one diner called the ramen the best they'd ever had, while another who'd lived in Japan found the tonkotsu broth properly rich but the noodles closer to Asian fusion than classic. Fair warning, and also a pretty good review. The sushi gets more consistent love, and the named standout is the Smokey Bear roll. Tonkatsu and potato croquettes round out the izakaya side, and a $65 tasting menu sends people home full rather than politely hungry.

At the bar, the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned gets called out by name, which tells you the cocktails get real attention too. Dress is business casual, the room runs moderately loud, and weekend nights are the busiest; weekday lunch (11:30AM-2:30PM) or an early dinner is the calmer play. There's no standing deal to report. Lunch and dinner run Monday through Friday with a mid-afternoon break, and the kitchen stays open straight through on weekends. Reservations are on OpenTable.
