Nine Garden doesn't look like much from the parking lot of its Archer Avenue strip mall, which is exactly the kind of setup that tends to hide the best Chinatown kitchens.

This one earned real validation beyond word of mouth: Best Heritage Restaurant at the 2026 Jean Banchet Awards, Chicago's own local food-world honors. The Shanghai-style menu is the draw — Chicago Magazine singles out the crab lion's head hot pot (a delicate, oversized pork meatball simmered with crab) and the dongpo pork belly, a slow-braised, soy-and-wine-glazed cut that's basically the regional signature dish done right.

Service runs on the slower side, which tracks with a kitchen more focused on the food than the turn time. It's a reservation-optional, come-hungry kind of place — no frills, no hype beyond what the plates themselves earn.
