The Edgewater institution at 5910 N. Broadway that people actually mean when they say "Moody's" came later, in 1969, when Kahoun built and designed the space himself, modeling it on the beer halls he'd frequented while serving in the Army in Germany. Kahoun ran it for decades before his death in January 2018 at age 84, having built a life, as his obituary put it, on burgers and beer.
The menu has stayed famously simple -- one page, burgers, hand-cut fries, beer sold by the pitcher -- which is as much a statement as a limitation. The tree-shaded, two-level beer garden and indoor fireplaces mean the place works in every season, a rare trait for a neighborhood bar that isn't trying to be anything more than what it already is.
