Libertad is the downtown Skokie restaurant that made Lincoln Avenue a destination for Latin American small plates, and it still feels like the neighborhood spot it set out to be: a small, fun room with an open kitchen, where you drop in, share a few plates and order a very good cocktail.

Marcos Rivera, who grew up in his family's restaurants, opened it in 2011 with Roberto Maso, and family runs through the menu, which still leans on Mama Rivera's salsa and mole. The dinner menu is built for passing around and changes with the seasons, sourcing from Mick Klüg Farms, Spence Farm and other local growers: chipotle hummus with chapati, a salmon and tuna crudo on a tlayuda, burrata with mezcal-habanero pears, chicken tinga flautas, Spanish octopus with chorizo, lomo saltado, St. Louis ribs with pineapple-chipotle barbecue sauce and skirt steak with chipotle goat cheese and yuca fries. The vegan arepa with Mama Rivera's mole is the sleeper.

Cocktails come from mixologist Ziyad Asrar, the wine list from sommelier Shebnem Ince, and the margaritas use fresh-squeezed lime. Weekend brunch runs 10am to 2pm with chilaquiles, shakshuka verde, carne en su jugo, churro French toast and $11 mimosas on the patio. It's closed Mondays, books on OpenTable, and a sister restaurant, Libertad Sur, now runs in Wicker Park.
