La Crêperie bills itself as the oldest crêperie in the United States, and the family-run room on North Clark has the patina to back it up: founder Germain Roignant's name is still on the masthead and on the menu, where the flambéed Suzette à la Germain (Grand Marnier, orange and a lemon reduction) is the dessert to order.

Order the French cider — Aval Gold or Aval Rosé — or pick from a short, all-French wine list, Kronenbourg on the beer side, and classic French cocktails like a French 75, a Kir Royale and a sidecar on Armagnac.

The real secret is out back: a walled garden patio you can't see from the street that feels genuinely transported. The restaurant's specials and events are suspended for now (its own site says so), so there's no deal here — just a decades-old institution. Kitchen hours run 5 to 9pm Tuesday through Thursday and noon to 9pm Friday through Sunday, closed Monday; reservations are by phone.
