Kyoten

Logan Square · Japanese/Omakase Community-sourced, unverified
📍 2507 W Armitage Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Kyoten is Chicago's answer to the idea that a genuinely world-class omakase doesn't need New York or Los Angeles to exist — chef Otto Phan trained at Nobu and Masa before deciding Chicago was where he'd build his own room, and the Logan Square counter he opened in 2018 has been drawing comparisons to the best sushi counters in the country ever since.

Chef Otto Phan's omakase counter

It's intentionally tiny: somewhere between 8 and 10 seats depending on the source, which keeps the pacing personal and the fish selection tightly controlled rather than stretched across a bigger room. The price reflects the ambition — $440 to $490 per person before tax, squarely in rare-splurge territory — and Time Out's full 5-out-of-5 rating alongside Phil Vettel calling it the city's most exhilarating sushi experience aren't the kind of praise that gets thrown around loosely.

For anyone not ready for that price tag, the sister restaurant Kyoten Next Door next door runs a more approachable $159 omakase — a real option worth knowing about, even if it's technically a separate business from this flagship counter.
