Kumiko is proof that a world-class restaurant's bar program doesn't have to live inside the restaurant: Julia Momose, bar manager at the two-Michelin-starred Oriole, opened this West Loop cocktail bar around the corner from it — backed by Oriole's own owners, Noah and Cara Sandoval — specifically because Oriole itself has no bar of its own.

It paid off in the biggest way a bar can: Kumiko won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar in 2025. The focus leans into Japanese spirits beyond the usual whiskey suspects — shochu, sake, umeshu, lighter gins and apple brandies — built around a drink-led, food-paired format that treats cocktails with the same seriousness most places reserve for tasting menus.

On weekends, a separate daytime identity takes over as Cafe Kumiko, a late-morning brunch option for anyone who wants the space without the full evening ceremony. It's easily one of the more decorated bars in the city, and its Oriole connection means the pedigree runs all the way through.
