King Crab House calls itself Chicago's oldest crab house, and the claim fits the room: a Halsted Street seafood institution in Lincoln Park that has outlasted plenty of trendier neighbors by doing one thing on purpose.

The smartest seat in the house is at the bar, because that's where the oyster bar menu lives — 85-cent oysters on the half shell, 90-cent wings, 95-cent peel-and-eat shrimp, 50-cent cheddar jalapeño poppers and a $3.95 hamburger, with $8.95 mussels, fried oysters and a fried perch sandwich for anyone who wants it to eat like dinner. The terms are printed right on the menu and worth knowing before you sit down: bar seating only, a two-drink minimum per person (cocktails or mocktails both count), and none of it goes out the door as takeout. If you'd rather go all in, the dining room runs all-you-can-eat snow crab for $69.95 — Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9pm, plus weekend afternoons from 11:30am to 3pm — along with all-you-can-eat fried perch ($28.95) and crawfish boil bags ($39.95), for parties of four or fewer, booked by phone after 3pm.

There's also a $15 corkage fee if you bring your own wine, which takes a little of the sting out of a crab-legs bill. OpenTable diners have it at roughly 4.5 to 4.6 stars across nearly a thousand reviews — not bad for a place whose best deal costs less than a dollar a bite.
