Roger Wroblewski grew up in Heart of Chicago, the old-school neighborhood around Oakley Avenue on the western edge of Pilsen, and spent years wanting to open a restaurant there.

The roasted garlic bulb with bread is the starter that sets the tone — simple, generous, exactly what you want before the rest of the meal.

In 1999 he and his wife, Joan, did it, naming the place after Joan's late father, Ignac Glavac. Ignotz has been a family operation ever since. Their three daughters, Alexis, Olivia and Isabella, work the floor and each has a dish named after her, and as the family puts it, stop in anytime and you'll meet one of them. This is old-school red-sauce Chicago Italian, and the menu doesn't pretend otherwise. The move is the Chicken Vesuvio: a half chicken and potatoes roasted with garlic and herbs in white wine. It takes 40 minutes, so order it as soon as you sit down.

Chicken Olivia (broiled with sage and rosemary), Veal Alexis with mushrooms and artichoke hearts, and Steak Isabella, a 14-ounce strip with sweet peppers and pepperoncini, are the family-named calls. Start with shrimp a la Agnes or baked clams, and add an extra side of roasted garlic for $3. Entrées come with soup or salad plus pasta or potatoes, so pace yourself. Reservations are strongly recommended, by phone only. Ignotz is closed Mondays, open 11am to 9:30pm Tuesday through Thursday, until 10pm on Friday, 3 to 10pm Saturday and 2 to 9pm Sunday. The private room next door, Ignotz One Door South, seats 65.
