Hopleaf is the Andersonville Belgian beer bar that a lot of Chicagoans measure every other beer bar against: a long, serious draft and bottle list with a heavy Belgian lean, a front bar that feels like a neighborhood tavern, and a back dining room and kitchen that take the food just as seriously as the beer.

It's on North Clark Street in the heart of Andersonville's restaurant strip, a short walk from the Berwyn Red Line stop. Two orders come up in almost every write-up. The CB&J is Hopleaf's grown-up take on a PB&J: house-made cashew butter and fig jam with a little raclette, pan-fried on sourdough until it melts together — sweet, savory and better than it has any right to be. The other is the moules frites, a pot of mussels with a pile of Belgian-style fries and mayo for dipping, which is exactly what you want next to a Belgian ale.

The bar is mostly walk-in: a limited number of reservations go out through Tock, and the rest of the room is first-come, first-served, so expect a wait at prime dinner hours. It's 21-and-over at the bar. Happy hour pricing has been mentioned in neighborhood guides, but no current days, times or prices could be confirmed, so treat Hopleaf as a destination rather than a deal.
