Hai Yen has anchored Argyle Street's Vietnamese food corridor long enough to collect real accolades: Chicago Magazine named it Best New Restaurant back in May 2001, the Chicago Tribune featured it in a 'Three Forks' roundup that same November, and it carried a Zagat rating from 2004 through 2011.

The menu runs enormous — 120 numbered items before drinks and dessert — but the dish worth building a visit around is the pho dac biet, a bowl loaded with beef brisket, flank, meatballs, tripe, and tendon in a broth light enough that one longtime reviewer called it life-changing. Beyond the soup, Hai Yen leans into a genuinely interactive side of Vietnamese dining: tableside fondue pots, soup pots, and grills let diners cook portions of their meal right at the table, a format that turns dinner into something closer to a shared project than a plated order. Rice-paper gui cuon stuffed with pork and shrimp, and grilled lemongrass beef wrapped with shrimp and honey, round out the cold-case and grill sections.

The restaurant has stayed open on essentially the same schedule for two decades — closed Wednesdays, open long hours the rest of the week — a consistency that's rare on a strip where turnover is common. A second location once operated on North Clark Street but has since closed, leaving this original Argyle Street spot as the real deal.
