The Graceful Ordinary opened on the Fox River in downtown St. Charles in November 2021, founded by Chris and Megan Curren, who met working in Chicago restaurants -- Chris as the award-winning executive chef, Megan running events -- and the name borrows a colonial-era term for a town tavern, with the wood-burning-hearth menu turning over with whatever local farms have that week.

The kitchen team runs deeper than just the owners: chef de cuisine Adam Kappesser and pastry chef Martina Preradovic round out the line, while general manager and wine director Dan Velisek runs the beverage program. It's since drawn a New York Times feature and the Chicago Tribune's 2023 pick for Best Suburban Restaurant, and locally it swept the 2025 Kane County Choice Awards' "Best of the Fox" categories for both Restaurant and Romantic Dinner.

The restaurant frames its own mission simply: "to create a place to be comfortable," with a tagline, "there is grace in the ordinary," that doubles as the thesis for turning a humble colonial word into a genuinely elevated dining room.
