Gino's East started with two Chicago cab drivers, Sam Levine and Fred Bartoli, who spent their shifts circling the Magnificent Mile dreaming up a pizza place and opened one with George Loverde in 1966.

The flagship on East Superior Street, a short walk off Michigan Avenue, is still the 'OG Gino's East experience': deep dish with that famous golden cornmeal-colored crust and long cheese pull, three floors of walls covered in customers' graffiti (a tradition that started when diners carved initials into the wooden booths and the restaurant decided not to fight it), a Comedy Bar on the third floor that has run weekly stand-up since 2011, and a third-floor terrace. Deep dish takes about 45 minutes to bake, so plan for it — or order ahead. The weekday happy hour, Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6pm, is the cheap way to settle in while you wait: $5 pours of the house Original Gino's Lager or Superior West Coast IPA, $5 pinot noir and pinot grigio, $6 well cocktails, and $6 hummus plates or garlic breadsticks with marinara and giardiniera ranch.

Note the happy hour doesn't include pizza. The Superior Street location takes reservations, runs 11am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and until 10pm Friday and Saturday, and has a loyalty program ($10 off every $150). Gino's also has a South Loop location and ships frozen pies nationwide.
