The Buttitta family, who came to Chicago from Palermo, opened the original Gigio's in the 1960s a few blocks south of here, and John Buttitta moved the shop to this Broadway storefront in 1993, where the hand-tossed, thin and crispy crust has stayed the same through every change on the block. Whole pies run from a 12-inch cheese at $11.75 to an 18-inch at $22.95, with toppings extra, and the rest of the menu is a greatest-hits list of Chicago corner-joint food: Italian beef, Italian sausage and the combo of both, meatball sandwiches, pizza puffs, pizza bread, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms and onion rings, plus spaghetti, mostaccioli, ravioli and lasagna that all come with garlic bread. The best value is the daily specials board, combo meals with fries and a can of pop, from a $7.95 pizza puff to a $10.95 order of breaded party wings and an $11.95 Italian beef.
It's open every day from 10am to midnight, which makes it one of the more reliable late-night bites near the Wilson and Lawrence Red Line stops, with dine-in, pickup and delivery. Pickup orders close 30 minutes before closing and delivery orders 45 minutes to an hour before. A separate Gigio's in Evanston is a different business.
