Brothers John and Gene Luszcz, immigrants from a small farm village in Poland's Malopolskie region, opened their first deli on West Roscoe Street in March 1972, drawing on their family's sausage-making recipes and smoking techniques, and the business later moved to Belmont Avenue before opening this full European market in September 2009, in the old Delicatessen Meyer space on Lincoln Avenue. The heart of it is the sausage: more than 40 varieties of homemade, naturally wood-smoked links made fresh by traditional European sausage-makers, alongside fresh meats cut to order by butchers the old-fashioned way. The rest of the store covers a full delicatessen, a bakery, produce, dairy, imported European groceries and confections, and beer, wine and liquor, with seasonal hams, Easter butter lambs and holiday turkeys you can reserve by calling 773-SAUSAGE.
Upstairs, the European-style rooftop beer and wine garden opens from Memorial Day weekend into the season, Friday through Sunday, with Polish sausage and bratwurst plates off an open wood grill, schnitzel, golabki, pierogi and goulash, rotating taps and wines by the glass among the flowers and herbs. The store is open daily, and the Western Brown Line stop is around the corner.
